For many years, if you looked in the area where Karen and Brent sit now, you would have seen the smiling faces of Ad and Reta Woodley. Ad joined our church on April 7, 1929 – 96 years ago tomorrow. His delightful scrapbook of memories of St. Paul’s is now in our archives. In 1918, when Ad’s family moved to Milton, they planned to attend Knox, as his mother, Agnes, was a Presbyterian. However, on their first visit there, Agnes became upset when she was asked to move from the seat she occupied. The next Sunday, they went across the street to our Methodist church and were warmly greeted by a friendly usher. It’s no surprise, then, that Ad placed great importance on being a welcoming church. He wrote, “when I was head usher, I always made it a custom to have the outside doors open during the morning service.” One summer a family visiting from southern United States drove around Milton looking for a church to attend and told Ad that they came to St. Paul’s because it was the only one with an open door. They returned to worship here for many years whenever they were in the area. Ad did admit that the open door was not without problems: one morning a large stray dog entered and settled contentedly under a pew near the front.
